Chasing Shadows: Experience the Total Eclipse

Chasing Shadows: Experience the Total Eclipse in Cuba Missouri

In the heart of Missouri, nestled amidst picturesque landscapes and friendly communities, lies the charming town of Cuba.  With a big Midwestern sky, the anticipation builds for a breathtaking spectacle—a solar eclipse will occur on April 8, 2024. Residents and visitors alike are gearing up for an experience of a lifetime.  Our murals, monuments, and historic sites serve as colorful backdrops to this celestial event.

The Path of Totality

This awe-inspiring phenomenon occurs when the moon aligns perfectly between the Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow upon the planet. Cuba, Missouri, finds itself perfectly positioned within the path of 98% totality. This means that for a precious few minutes, the moon will obscure the sun, casting a shadow over the town and plunging it into a surreal twilight.

Planning for the Big Day

Preparations for the April 8 eclipse have been underway for months, as locals eagerly anticipate the celestial event. From organizing viewing parties to coordinating safety measures, the community is pulling out all the stops to ensure everyone can safely witness the eclipse in all its glory. Avoid traffic heading south to the path of totality, and spend the day in Cuba where there is so much to see and do. Again, we experience 98% totality without the crowds and traffic.

Prime Viewing Spots

As the date draws nearer, residents and visitors scout out the best locations to witness the eclipse. Parks, open fields, and scenic overlooks are expected to be popular choices, providing unobstructed views of the sky as the moon passes in front of the sun. Here in Cuba, we have Hood Park, Cuba Visitors Center, and our Historic Uptown District on Route 66 as prime locations for eclipse viewing.

Safety First

While the allure of the eclipse is undeniable, it’s essential to remember safety precautions. Staring directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can cause permanent eye damage. Eclipse glasses or solar filters for cameras are a must-have for anyone planning to observe or photograph the event. Be sure eclipse glasses include the ISO certification printed on the temple. Capturing the Moment

For photography enthusiasts, the April 8 eclipse presents a golden opportunity to capture stunning images of the celestial phenomenon. From close-up shots of the sun’s corona to wide-angle views of the darkened landscape, there’s no shortage of creative possibilities for documenting this rare event. Avoid pointing your phone or camera lens directly at the sun. Like our eyes, the lens in cameras can also be damaged to prolonged exposure to the sun.

Creative Touches

If looking up is not an option, the eclipse shows itself everywhere! Look for eclipse shadows on buildings, under trees, and even in the car. Use items like a colander, a straw hat, or a slotted serving spoon, or anything with holes to create eclipse images. Or there’s always the pinhole camera made with simple household items. Get creative and see the eclipse differently!
